I had an opportunity to meet Lois McMaster Bujold recently, and I told her what recently occurred to me: the first two Vorkosigan books are responsible for bringing me back into science fiction, after two decades of straying from a childhood built on Asimov and After I finished it, I had numerous people tell me that the saga doesn't really get going until Miles's story begins in the books presented in this volume. So far as the Vorkosigan Saga is concerned: The Shopping Trip from Barrayar. The hero of most of the stories is Miles Vorkosigan: charismatic leader, strategic genius, crippled hunchback, and son of one of the most powerful men on his militaristic backwater home planet. First, most of the books center around a character named Miles Vorkosigan, but the first two are told from the perspective of Miles' mother, Cordelia Naismith. Starting with this novel, I began to be impressed by the increasingly complex web of interpersonal relationships that this kind of generational saga can portray. If you want to jump into the Vorkosigan Saga, you can do so at any point, but be aware that the books vary in their amount of romantic content. Hadn't heard of the Ivan book but she's in the past hinted that he's not as dumb as he seems, so it'd be pretty cool if she wrote him up as sneaking a whole career of his own without *Miles* twigging to it!
